How to use apps abroad to save money

When you're on your holiday, you're looking for everything to be as hassle-free as possible. Enter the host of apps designed to help make your holidays a breeze…

1. Google Translate - best for help translating
This free app allows you to translate almost anything! It has many different features which allow you to type in text for direct translation, record a conversation or you can even use your camera to take a photo of a menu or an information board.

You don’t even need to be connected to the internet for the word lens feature to work, which is really handy!

2. Splitwise - Stress less when sharing expenses on trips

Travelling with friends can be fun but it can be a hassle figuring out who owes who. This is where splitwise comes in, this app is perfect for travelling with friends as it allows you and your friends to add various bills to the app and it keeps track of who owes who and you can settle up with each other. 

3. Trail Wallet – helping you keep track of your budget

We're big believers that you'll be 1000x more relaxed after your holiday if you don't land at home knowing that you've let costs run away with you whilst you were away.

Trail Wallet is a travel budgeting app with an easy-to-use interface. It helps you stay in touch with what you’re spending, which is great for holidays but even more important if you’re taking several months out to travel.

4. Citymapper – clear, easy route maps that work

Citymapper is one of the more obvious ones on our list, and not technically a money-saver, it continues to be a genuinely user-friendly way to get around many cities across the world. Outside the capitals, you won’t find every city on here, but they’re adding new destinations all the time – you can even vote for new additions.

It offers clear, sensible mapping and covers all modes of public transport, including bike hire schemes, along with taxi prices. In that way it could still be a money-saver of sorts. Better to know where you’re going than to have to give up and climb into a rickshaw.
